The Open Medal 2014
This Saturday the Open Medal is taking place. This is a medal with a difference as your score will be paired with a final round score of a professional in the Open Championship. When you come to the Pro Shop and sign in you will be asked to pick a name out of the hat. The score your professional shoots in the final round will be added to the score you shot and the lowest total will be the winner. We hope you can join in the fun on Saturday.
CAPTAIN'S DAY SPLASH!
On Sunday 13th July, Ely's Men's Captain Dave Woods, hosted his Captain's Day when 134 golfers played a singles Stableford competition. The day was split into morning and afternoon shotgun starts, and it proved to be a "game of two halves"! Whilst the morning players were leaving the clubhouse after their relaxing lunchtime drinks, the 72 afternoon competitors were playing only their second holes at 1:15 pm, when an electrical storm halted play, and the tropical, torrential cloudburst flooded the course within minutes.
Thankfully, the course drained remarkably quickly allowing play to resume after only an hour's delay. The patience, perseverance and spirit of the golfers had to be admired and applauded. The resulting atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards was only bettered by the amazingly high standard of the scores returned in such testing conditions. The morning golfers were treated to halfway house refreshments, whilst the later players enjoyed basket meals to the background harmonies of "The Caverners" The winner of "The Captain's Prize", with a fantastic 40 points off a handicap of 1, was Luke Ryan. The handicap section winners were Richard Yardy, Chris Ellis and Alvin Sulman.
Read Bowl 2014 (Past Captains Trophy)
11 Past Ladies' Captains entered the Stableford competition for the Read Bowl on Friday 11th July with 5 others coming for lunch including Flo Read and her daughter Wendy Ramsell. Flo presented the trophy to the club in 1979 and this is the 35th time the competition has been held.
The winner was Jane Webster with 38 points. The runner up was Liz Smith with 30 points.
Flo who is 101 years old, presented the trophy to Jane.
Ladies Captains Day
It has been bought to my attention that we didn't list all of the prize winners on Ladies Captains Day. So just to complete the list of winners Ange Costard won nearest the pin on the 2nd hole and Lisa Charlton won nearest the pin on the 12th.
