The Open Championship 2014
On Sunday evening Rory Mcllroy won his third major title after 4 days of thrilling golf around Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Rory had a 6 shot lead going into the final round which may seem a lot but under the extreme pressure of major championship golf it could have easily faded away. However Rory carded a battling 71 for his final round and lifted the Claret Jug beating Sergio Garcia and Ricky Fowler by just two shots. One thing in particular stood out for me at this year's Open was the course strategy the players adopted.
Most players opted for irons and fairway woods off of a lot of the tees as the rough was very punishing if the fairway was missed. This is a strategy I would like to see more amateurs using when faced with a tight par 4 and even a par 5. We see lots of members pull their driver out on a short par 4 like the 7th and as a result when the shot goes wrong they can end up in the bunkers, in the trees or worse still out of bounds.
Consider hitting an iron, hybrid or fairway wood off the tee and lay up before the bunkers as this will only leave you a short iron into the green. Even a simple change like this could save you a shot a round; just imagine what might be possible if you approached other holes in the same way!
Here at the Proshop we offer playing lessons to help you understand course management and give you advice on how to play certain holes. If you would like to book a playing lesson with either Paul, Jamie or me, please click here to get in touch or come along to the Pro Shop to find out more.
Seniors Golf
Last week I played on the Seniors Golf Circuit down at The Players Club near Bristol. After rounds of 68 and 73 (3 under total) I finished in a tie for 5th place. After this I then went on to play in the Seniors Open Championship qualifying held at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. Unfortunately it didn't prove to be my day and as a result I didn't qualify to play in the Seniors Open Championship. I would like to thank everyone who wished me luck and showed their support.
