Captains Putt out and Drive In

Last Saturday was the annual Captain’s putt out and drive in with lots of members watching to show their support. Firstly, Ann Russell and John Aspinall had the job of putting out on the 18th green to mark an end to their year as captains. Then it was time for the incoming Captain’s, Greg Davidson, Marion Hough, Alan Munday and Alfie Guy Pinkney to hit their drives to signal the start of their year as Captains. It was great to see so many people around on the day to support the outgoing and incoming captains. I would like to wish the incoming Captains all the best for the 2018 season and I’m sure it will be another great year for the golf club.

Ely City Golf Club – PGA PRO AM – Tuesday 21 August

Our annual PGA Pro Am will be taking place on Tuesday 21st August. Pro Am's are great days for everyone involved and with superb prizes from leading brand like Ping really make this an event not to be missed. Team entries are now open and is on a first come first serve basis. Team entry fee is £240 (£80PP) for members and £260 for non-members which includes Bacon Roll and coffee upon arrival, 18 holes with a PGA Professional plus a chance to win top prizes and a two-course meal with your team professional after your round.

Junior news

Junior Group Coaching – Starts Saturday 14th April

On Saturday the 14th of April we will be starting our very popular Junior group coaching. Our junior coaching so grown over the years and continues to go from strength to strength. The coaching sessions run from 10:00 until 11:00 and are open all juniors including non-members.

Equipment can be provided if required so if you know a junior who may want to come along and give golf a try this is the perfect opportunity. Junior coaching costs £8 per session and we will cover all aspects of the game over the spring/summer months.

If you have family members or friends who maybe interested in this please let them know as we want to grow golf as much as possible in Ely and these type of group lessons are perfect for this. If you would like more information, please contact us. 

 
 
 
Don't overlook its importance

For years one of the key questions when buying a new driver was: regular, stiff or x-stiff? It goes to show that people have always known that the shaft needs to be considered, but how much importance should we place on it?

Correct shaft, better statistics
Do you want to hit more fairways this season? The two ball flights you can see below perfectly display the risks of using a shaft flex or shaft weight that’s poorly matched to your swing speed.

Course Illustration

A shaft that is too stiff or heavy will likely lead to a lower ball flight that can leak right (like the red arrow), whereas a shaft that is too light or flexible often kills distance and causes hooks (like the white arrow). Working together it won’t take long to narrow down the best shafts to optimise your distance and accuracy, helping you to hit more fairways.

Srixon Z 565 driver

Getting the right head to match the shaft will also play a big part, and one we could try is the Srixon Z 565 driver. It not only has an adjustable hosel we can use to optimise your launch for a piercing ball flight, but its face also extends around the crown and sole to make the sweetspot larger to give you more accuracy off-centre.

When and why?

When it comes to golf equipment, there are very few things we see neglected as much as grips, which is surprising when you consider they are your only point of contact with the club. If you keep on reading you’ll find out why it’s important to keep your grips in good condition and when you should look to replace them, as well as an offer that we're currently running in-store.

When should you consider a regrip?
Small amounts of wear occur with each use of your grips and it’s easy to miss early warning signs. As a rule-of-thumb, your grips should be replaced every 40 rounds, but this can be sooner if you practice regularly. For most of you, that would mean replacing your grips every year.

Why regrip?
Worn grips force you to hold the club tighter than usual, increasing pressure and tension in your hands, wrists and arms. This reduces the head speed you can create and therefore your distance. However, using a tacky grip that matches the size of your hands – no, it’s not one size fits all – will cater for a lighter pressure and give you more confidence on every swing.
