Seniors Open Qualifying 2018

Last week I travelled to Scotland to try and qualify for the 2018 Seniors Open at St Andrews.

Over 750 seniors entered the qualifying with only 24 places available over the 4 courses.

I played at the Fairmont Torrence Course only a few mile from St Andrews.

After a shaky start I was 4 over par after 6 holes but I had a couple of birdies coming in and finished on a 2 over par total in testing windy conditions.

Out of the 145 players only two managed to shoot under par giving you an idea of just how tough the course played.

Unfortunately, I missed out on a playoff by just 1 shot which was disappointing however I will take the positives from the experience and try again next year.

Thank you to everyone who wished me well before I left and while I was away.

Fancy keeping the summer going?

As in previous emails we have advertised our golf holiday to Portugal in November and with only a few places left I wouldn’t want you to miss out on what will be a fantastic finish to the season. With daily coaching in the mornings from Paul and myself then after lunch playing the stunning Vila Sol golf course. The trip costs £479 for 4 nights B&B including all practice balls, greenfees, coaching and airport transfers.

Competition news

Open Medal 2018

Last Saturday the Open medal took place with over 120 members taking part in this medal with a twist. The twist being that when you sign in you draw a name out of the hat for a golfer who has made the cut in the Open Championship. Then the overall winners are decided when we add the members medal round to the final round of the player whose name was drawn from the hat. Below is a list of the results.

Simon Gribble + Rafa Cabrera Bello = 65 + 72 = 137

William Fordham + Kevin Na = 67 + 72 = 139

Doug Davidson + Matt Kutcha = 68 + 72 = 140

Luke Ryan + Phil Mickelson = 69 + 71 = 140

Coaching news

Get into Golf – NEW START DATE - Ladies taster golf sessions starting soon

Do you know any ladies who would like to come and give golf a try?

I am running a coaching programme to encourage more ladies to get into golf and hopefully become regulars. This is an ideal opportunity for ladies to learn how to play golf in a fun, no pressure environment with other beginner ladies. Every coaching session will be held on a Saturday from 12:00 until 1:00 with coffee/tea after in the clubhouse.

The start date for these fun group sessions is Saturday 11th August at 12:00. The lessons are £15 per person each week which includes your refreshments in the clubhouse after.

PING Demo Day

Wednesday 1st August 10:00 until 2:30 – Only a few spaces left

On Wednesday 1st August PING will be coming to Ely City Golf Club for a product demo day. Our demo days always prove to be very popular so if you are considering upgrading your clubs or adding to your current set. The demo day will run from 10:00 until 2:30 and from previous experience our demo days fill up fast so come and see us to book your time and avoid missing out.

Ely City PGA Pro-Am – Tuesday 21st August – ENTER YOUR TEAM NOW

Our annual PGA Pro Am will be taking place on Tuesday 21st August and we are pleased to announce that we already have a title sponsor for the event, Platinum Properties Ely. Pro Am's are great days for everyone involved and with superb prizes from leading brand like Ping really make this an event not to be missed.

Team entries are now open and is on a first come first serve basis. Team entry fee is £240 (£80PP) for members which includes Bacon Roll and coffee upon arrival, 18 holes with a PGA Professional with a chance to win top prizes plus a two-course meal with your team professional after your round.

Danger!

Are you the type of golfer who considers the danger ahead of you and plans accordingly, or do you pull a driver from the bag on every par-4 and par-5 without a blink? If you’re the latter then you need to read on.

Consider the danger
You hear pros talk a lot about the ‘smart shot’ in their post-round interviews. If you’re on the tee and there’s a bunker, ditch or other hazard around the distance that your driver or fairway wood normally flies, then make sure you change club to one that takes the trouble out of play, as displayed in this graphic. While you’ll have a slightly longer shot to the green, you’ll greatly reduce the chance of a big number.

Know your numbers
Of course, key to all of this is knowing how far each of your woods carries. If you’re looking to add more distance and control to your game, come and test the TaylorMade M4 driver, M4 fairway and M4 hybrid.
