Greetings from Andrew George
Ely City Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Make 2015 your best golfing year yet

Have you reached your golfing goals in 2014?
Has your handicap gone up rather than down?
Are you fed up of losing against your friends?

Well here at the Pro Shop we want to help you improve and make golf more enjoyable. Lots of people have the mindset that having lessons will make you worse or that you are giving in by asking for help. We feel that this mindset is one of the reasons why the average golf handicap has only reduced by 2 strokes in the last 15 years. This is the ideal time of year to invest in some lessons with a PGA Professional and take your game to the next level. We can help improve all areas of your game from tee to green and increase your enjoyment.

Golf lessons start at just £28 and can be booked from Monday through to Saturday and at a time that's convenient for you. If you would like to find out more about golf lessons with any of us here at the Pro Shop please call us on 01353 663317 or email us here

Chris Ellis makes instant improvement after a lesson

Last week Chris Ellis came to me for a lesson after having a particularly bad spell with his golf. Chris was having problems with his ball striking especially with his irons. As you can see from the pictures below I made two key adjustments to help Chris make an instant improvement. Firstly, Chris had the golf ball too far back in his stance and this created too much shaft lean at address but also meant Chris couldn't turn correctly in the backswing. Lastly, we focused on how the body weight should move during the backswing. Looking at the picture below with the arrow, Chris now has more turn and a much better weight shift, making his swing more efficient and repeatable.

As a result of these simple changes the ball strike improved and Chris was able to hit a draw again. After the lesson (and a little practice) Chris entered the Monthly medal and finished second in division one after a nett 69. Chris said to me after the round "I wish I had come to see you earlier". Well done Chris and keep up the good work.

As for my golf

I've been playing some consistent golf continuing on from the Ely Pro Am. I took a team of members to the Grove in Hertfordshire for a Pro Am. The team made up of Mick Munnelly, Pete Rains and Charlie Rains finished tied 3rd and I finished in a tie for tie for 4th after a 3 under par round of 69. From there I went on to play in the Chelmsford Pro Am were I finished in a tie for 5th after a 1 under par round of 67. Feeling good about how I was playing after these events I decided to enter a TP Tour event which was held last Monday at Chigwell Golf Club in Essex. The TP Tour was set up for full time players by former Ryder Cup player Ronan Rafferty giving professionals the chance to compete on some of the best courses in the UK. After a 2 under par round of 69 I finished in 2nd place. Next week is the 5th PGA East Region Order of Merit event at Basildon Golf Club. Paul and I will be playing in this event on Monday and Tuesday and we will update you next week on our progress.

Attention members

Approximately 13 Taster Ladies will be heading out onto the course at 3:00pm on Saturday, Please bear this in mind and if the front nine isn't busy we would recommend starting from the 10th tee.
