Captains' Charity Day
Last Friday the Golf Club hosted Captains' Charity Day, below is a short report by Men's Captain Dave Woods.
On a warm, sunny late September Friday, Ely's Captains' Charity Day was wonderfully supported with a saturated course of 23 teams in a shotgun start. All departments of the Club, (office, greens staff, food and beverage and Pro shop) excelled in staging a great day enjoyed by club members and 6 visiting teams. The team winners were Mark Smith, Peter Webster, Les Nuttall and Phil Hunter. Other highlights of the day were Vice Captain, Mick Munnelly's shamrock trousers and a hole-in-one on the 2nd by Hunstanton member, David "Bingo" Bingham. Members' wallets and purses were wrung dry in expert fashion by auctioneer Les Nuttall, to record an admirable profit on the day for the East Anglian Ambulance charity of just under £5000.
A huge vote of thanks is extended from Binnie and I to all the club members who participated by contributing, helping or playing on the day. Below you can see a few pictures from the day.
East Region Order of Merit
Last week I played in the 6th and final event of the East Region PGA Order of Merit at Rayleigh Golf Club in Essex. The scoring on the first day was very low with the overnight leader (Ian Ellis) shooting 9 under par 64. I played well in the first round with a bogey free round of 7 under par 66, it's not often you'll shoot 7 under par and be in a tie for third. In the second round I couldn't get my putter going and shot a 1 over par 74 which left me in a tie of 6th place for the event.
Three weeks ago I was tied 44 in the Order of Merit and after my last two events I jumped up to 13th place. My goal before the last two events was to climb up into the top 25 so I feel all the hard work I have put in over the last few months has paid off. As the East Region season comes to a close I will be competing on the Seniors Golf Circuit and the Thompson Tour this Autumn/Winter preparing me for the European Seniors Tour School at the end of January.
