David Howell plays Ely City
On Saturday, David Howell visited Ely to play 18 holes. This all came about as Fred Doughty (Ely member & David's father in law) asked if I would like a game with David. I jumped at the chance to play with a Ryder Cup star but I wanted to share it with as many members as I could and it snow balled from there with us running a raffle to give two members the chance to play alongside David.
David Howell played some great golf as he shot an eight-under-par round of 64. David was accompanied for the first nine holes by the club captain David Woods, raffle winner Luke Ryan and me. For the second half of his round, the English ace was joined by one of my assistant's Paul Geen, Club Chairman Ian Bridgeman and raffle winner Ian Macrea.
The highlight of David's round was a brilliant eagle at the 4th hole. Having found the fairway, he drilled a 3-wood 240 yards into wind to within 12 feet of the flag before holing a left-to-right breaking putt. There was another eagle for David on the 13th hole after finding the fairway he pulled his second shot left of the green but then proceeded to hole his chip.
During my 9 holes with David, I asked lots of questions about his experiences in the Ryder Cup and how he handled himself during such a big occasion. It was also great to hear about his success in the BMW Championship and most recently his victory at the Dunhill Links at St Andrews. It was a pleasure to spend time with David and hopefully we can do this again in the future.
David is now playing 7 weeks straight on the European Tour including the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and I'm sure we will be watching his progress.
