Academy news

Junior Academy – Term two starts this week – BOOK NOW

Our Junior Academy second term starts on Saturday, 29 June. Our aim for term two is to prepare juniors for getting on the course and to do this we are in the process of having a short par three course prepared on the practice ground for use during the sessions.

Enjoy 18 holes with a PGA Professional when you enter the Ely City Golf Club Pro-Am

The Ely City Golf Club PGA Pro-Am has been a huge success over the years and is a must-attend event for professionals, members and non-members alike. We would love to see lots of member’s teams supporting this event so check your diary now and keep Tuesday, 20 August free. Each year our prize table gets better and better and this year will be no exception.

We have already had several entries so if you are thinking about playing in this event don’t delay. If you are interested or would like to play click here for the traditional entry form and we will do the rest.

If you wish to enter the Pro-Am the entry fees are as follows:

Members - £80 each or £240 a team.
Non-members - £90 each or £270 a team.

If you would like more information don’t hesitate to speak to us in the pro shop.

Congratulations to Luke Ryan and Ashley Sizer

Last Sunday was the Men’s Club Championships and some of the golf played was of the highest order. In the morning Luke Ryan (68) and Isaac Rowlands (70) both shot under par rounds setting up for an exciting final round. In the Handicap Championships after round one Ashley Sizer (67 nett) was tied for the lead alongside Isaac Rowlands with lots of other players only a shot or two behind them.

The second round again produced some excellent scores and in the Handicap Championships Ashley Sizer finished with a nett 70 for a total of 137 which finished two shots ahead of Isaac Rowlands and three shots clear of Robert Braybrooke. In the Scratch Championship Luke Ryan shot a 74 which gave him a total of 142 which finished three shots clear of Isaac Rowlands who shot 75.

Congratulations to Luke and Ashley on winning the Club Scratch and Handicap Championships and to everyone who competed over the 36 holes.

Keep safe and protect yourself in the hot weather

Did you know being just slightly dehydrated will have an impact on your concentration and how far you hit the golf ball? Try following these tips to help stay hydrated on the course:

Have a pre-round pint of water, if you can’t drink that much a large glass will be better than nothing at all.
Make sure you keep drinking during your round. It’s recommended to have a few sips of water every 10-15 minutes in hot conditions.

If you follow those two tips, I guarantee you will feel better on the golf course and stay hydrated.

Lastly, we all know how important it is to protect ourselves against the sun, but I just wanted to give you all a few tips while out on the course:

Wear sunscreen! Good high factor protection is recommended and don’t forget to make sure you put it on your ears!
Try to cover up! Wearing a hat (wide brim is best) and sunglasses will give you some protection against the sun.
Consider using an umbrella to give you some cover from the sun!

Hopefully these few tips will help you stay hydrated and protected from the sun this summer and give you the best chance of playing better while out on the course.

Is there a better time than summer to be out playing golf? Silly question, really. So, now you’ve got your cap on and you’re lathered in sun lotion, it’s time to make sure the most important part of your body (arguably) is protected: your eyes.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
